London Giants to host historic centre court Volleyball event in Brixton, London

On Saturday, February 1, the Brixton Recreation Centre will host its first-ever centre court volleyball event in over three decades. This milestone not only marks a new chapter for the London Giants but also reignites the spirit of competitive Volleyball in Brixton. In 1990, the Brixton Knights Women’s Team represented England in the CEV European Cups, making it the last time a competitive team took to the court at this iconic venue. Although the Brixton Knights no longer exist, the London Giants are determined to awaken the excitement of those days and bring European-level Volleyball back to the area, with plans to enter the CEV Challenge Cup in the upcoming seasons.

Exciting Matches and Community Engagement

The event will feature thrilling Volleyball action, starting with the London Giants Women taking on the local rivals, Inter Volleyball in the National English Volleyball League Division 1, followed by the London Giants Men battling the Essex Rebels in the Super League. Both teams will showcase high-level play, filled with fast rallies, powerful spikes, and dynamic moments that promise to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats.

Mihail Stoev, head coach of the London Giants Men, said: “After ‘waking up’ the iconic Crystal Palace by hosting the best four London teams in the Super League Live last year, we are excited to keep the momentum going by bringing the action to Brixton! Facing the current league leader is the perfect way to do it.”

A Celebration of Volleyball and Community

The event also promises to be a celebration of Volleyball and the local community. A DJ will provide music throughout the day, keeping the energy high, while free volleyball-themed giveaways add an extra layer of excitement. VIP guests, including the Mayor of Lambeth and the Cabinet Member for Sports and Leisure, will be in attendance, highlighting the importance of Volleyball and grassroots sports in the local area.

Seth Chen, head coach of the London Giants Women, shared: “The English sporting culture has always been nothing short of spectacular and we look forward to putting up a good show for our fans and community on February 1. Our ladies have been working extremely hard and are ready to fight for the top spot and promotion to the Super League at the end of this season.”

Looking Ahead

The London Giants are setting their sights on entering the CEV Challenge Cup, hoping to bring top-tier European Volleyball back to London, just as the Brixton Knights did in the early ‘90s.
